She was a devoted mother to three children: Kenneth Burns Jr. (Cynthia L. York), Pamela Watson (Terry V. Watson), and Wynndel Burns (Kimberly Burns). Marilyn took great pride in encouraging her children to dream big, work hard, and pursue education beyond high school. She believed learning was a lifelong journey, and she lived that belief every day.
Her work created opportunities that continue to benefit students today. In time, with the support of family, friends and colleagues, the Marilyn Spearman Foundation was established to provide financial support to deserving graduate students at Albany State University and Florida A&M University— ensuring her commitment to education would live on.

Spearman Foundation mission is to create scholarship opportunities, fund trainings/workshops, and educational events and work towards the advancement of students interested in an advanced Social Work education. The foundation further partners with community and education administrators, and local constituents to promote a more cooperative and inclusive learning environment and critically examine barriers to student success.
The Dr. Marilyn Spearman Scholarship Fund is created to honor Dr. Marilyn Spearman’s life-long love of education, service, Social Work, and mission to educate disadvantaged students. She has always supported scholastic excellence by giving of herself financially, providing tutorial sessions, and through the encouragement of disadvantaged scholars to strive toward superior performance in pursuit of higher education. Though Dr. Spearman has retired from academe, she continues to challenge students to become knowledgeable and credentialed in their chosen profession through the establishment of this scholarship. At the Dr. Marilyn Spearman Scholarship Fund, we are grateful for the partnership of those who choose to contribute to her legacy and impact the lives of budding Social Workers in need of assistance to reach their potential. We will keep current and potential partners informed on the latest news, events, and opportunities.
